Time Management - Tips For Saving Time and Keeping Your Attention on the Goal

The realisation of ambitions, the success of ventures, and the achievement of goals; all these things are delayed or pushed further away if you allow yourself to be distracted by the shallow and the trivial. Keep your attention focused on where you want to go. Pay no attention to what appears to be an interesting distraction but which is at best a waste of time and could possibly even cause a setback.

  • Stop checking your mail. Set up your email software so that it checks automatically a few times an hour and leave it at that. If it's really urgent they'll phone.
  • Un-subscribe from pointless mailings lists. How many to you actually read? Is the content really any use? Stick to the ones that provide advice and tips that are relevant to your project.
  • Discriminate between networking sites. Choose just a few and use them to their full potential. Don't register for more than that as you'll never be able to use them all. There won't be enough time!
  • Quality not quantity. Starting a blog is easy, maintaining a blog is not. So compose fresh and original content for your blog(s) and avoid the temptation to start another one. The same goes for any website.
  • Keep your status updates (e.g. Facebook, Twitter etc) to a minimum. Does anybody really care what you had for breakfast or what you're reading? If you can't think of anything useful or at least witty to add then move on to something else and enjoy the smug feeling that you're putting your precious time to better use.
  • Have some rest and recreation. Mindlessly surfing the net may seem like relaxation after a few hours at the computer but it doesn't give you any rest. Get away from the screen. Go for a walk in the park and look at the sky, get some exercise, have a bath. In other words refresh your body and your mind. Your spirit will thank you for it and you'll do a better job when you're next at the screen.
  • Make the most of what you have. If you've been on this earth for more than a couple of decades then you probably already know plenty of people who are no longer here. The older you become the longer that list grows, so make the most of the time you have left. It'll soon pass.
  • Set your home page to the task in hand. With tabbed browsing (in Firefox and IE for example) you can set yourself multiple home pages, so when you start your browser all the tabs open with their assigned pages. Set yours to open only on those blogs or sites on which you will be working on a regular basis.

If you've done your research then you know what to do in order to succeed so just get on with it. Your time is limited so make the most of every hour.
